Individual Note: 1891 Census shows Eliza Knighton living with her mother Ann at 8 Addisons Yard. There are two children already namely Alfred and Frank. William Burscough was born in August 1892 at the same address to mother Eliza Knighton and father James Burscough however it should be noted that obviously Eliza was not married to James Burscough at the time of the 1891 census and it it highly likely they never were. 1901 all shows the boys with the surname Lancaster and Eliza as a "widow".

Individual Note: William Burscough was born 1892 to father James William Burscough and mother Eliza Knighton. A couple of months after William was born, his father married another woman (whilst still married to his first wife ) He was definitely a bigamist.Meanwhile, William Burscough's mother, Eliza Knighton, married another man with the surname Lancaster. However Lancaster died shortly afterwards and so did his mother leaving the grandmother (Ann Knighton nee Collison) caring for the boys. To make it easier for her, she changed their names to Knighton (being their mother's maiden name)There were 4 boys and Eliza Knighton may not have been married to any of their father(s).The children of William Burscough and Mary Ellen Ward are known as Knighton, because by the time he married Mary Ellen Ward, he himself was known as Knighton. He married as Knighton and was buried as Knighton. It wasn't until William Burscough applied for some sort of pension that they found he had been born with a different surname.
